This program is designed to enhance communication skills for the achievement of personal and academic enrichment and career advancement through studies in language, literature, art, music, speech, film and theatre.
Areas of Emphasis
Students who intend to transfer to a four-year institution to earn a baccalaureate degree in any of the areas listed above may follow the sequence of general education and elective courses outlined in each section (click the appropriate link). Completing this sequence of courses will result in the attainment of an Associate of Arts degree from Southwest Tennessee Community College.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
To ensure progress and completion of a degree at Southwest and success in the workforce, the English department offers three ESL courses. All of the courses (ENGL 1001 English as a Second Language I, ENGL 1002 English as a Second Language II, and ENGL 1003 English as a Second Language III) focus on the four communication skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
