State Senator Dixon to Speak at Southwest's AmeriCorps Graduation Ceremony
Southwest Tennessee Community College will have a Graduation Ceremony for the staff members who have successfully completed their participation in the institution's AmeriCorps/Hamilton Neighborhood Initiative starting at 12 Noon, Wednesday, December 19. This special ceremony is set for Conference Room 100 in the Parrish Library/Administration Building on the Union Avenue Campus, 737 Union Avenue. State Senator Roscoe Dixon of Memphis will give the keynote address. The event is free and open to the public.
These graduating AmeriCorps members have performed fix-up and cleanup tasks for the Hamilton Neighborhood Initiative. They also have been involved in other community outreach efforts that are designed to improve the quality of life in the Hamilton High School area.
Upon completion of service, AmeriCorps members receive an educational grant to help finance college or pay back student loans. Full-time staffers receive $4,725, for successfully performing 1700 hours of community service during a one-year period. Part-time workers will receive $2,362, for completing 900 hours of community outreach over a two-year time span. In addition to the grant incentives, AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance twice monthly.
Since 1998, the Tennessee Commission on National and Community Service has awarded more than $300,000 to Southwest for this innovative community-based redevelopment effort. The City of Memphis Division of Housing and Community Development has awarded the College over $200,000 in matching funds for the project.
Southwest Tennessee Community College is a Tennessee Board of Regents institution.
