STCC's McAlpin Awarded ITEC Scholarship
Michael McAlpin, an Information Technology (IT)
major at Southwest Tennessee Community College, on June 5, was named the
recipient of the 2001 Memphis Information Technology Exposition and
Conference (ITEC) Scholarship. The Sixth Annual ITEC Expo was held June
6-7, at the Cook Convention Center. Imark Communications, the Memphis
ITEC coordinating organization, annually donates the $1,000 scholarship
to an outstanding IT student.
Imark executive and event coordinator, Toby
Espinosa, presented the scholarship to McAlpin. "We at Imark
Communications are proud to recognize Michael as an outstanding student,
as well as an individual," Espinosa said. "With the help and
guidance of STCC, we plan to continue our support of higher education in
Memphis."
McAlpin, a Federal Express employee, enrolled at
STCC in January 2000. His studies at the College have taught him that
working in the IT arena demands having new skills and the ability to
continuously adjust to ongoing advancements. The honors student plans to
graduate during the 2001 Fall Commencement, earning an Associate of
Applied Science degree in Information Technology with a concentration in
Visual Desktop Applications Development. He also plans to build on his
A.A.S. degree by transferring to a four-year college or university, and
is looking forward to a successful career in the IT industry.
"I am very grateful for winning the ITEC
scholarship," McAlpin said. "It will be a tremendous help to
me in achieving my educational goals."
George Williams, STCC's Dean of Business, Career
Studies and Technology, commended both Imark and McAlpin. "The ITEC
scholarship is an excellent example of business/educational
partnerships," Williams observed. "Michael is really a bright
student. We are glad that he could be honored with this scholarship and
appreciate the continued support that Imark Communications provides for
the College and its students."
A recognized leader in technology for Memphis and
the Mid-South, STCC has played a crucial role with the Memphis ITEC Expo
for the past six years. The Expo is a comprehensive technology program
with an educational focus that provides hands-on experience with the
latest developments in emerging technologies.
