STCC to Present Forum on Domestic Violence
The Department of Library Services and the Student Government Association at Southwest Tennessee Community College are the co-sponsors of a panel discussion titled Domestic Violence: Breaking the Chains. This community outreach initiative is set for the Union Avenue Campus, 737 Union Avenue, at 9 a.m., Thursday, October 25. The event will be held in the Parrish Library/Administration Building, Conference Room 100. It is free and open to the public.
Panelists for the public forum include Dr. Betty Winter, executive director of the Family Trouble Center; Elizabeth Shelley, community service coordinator, Abused Women's Services, YWCA; Latoya N. Thomas, coordinator, YWCA Domestic Violence Project; Lieutenant Robert C. Gill, supervisor, Domestic Violence Unit, Memphis Police Department; Dr. Kitty Lawson, executive director of Victim to Victory Inc.; and Clarence Christian, associate professor of Social Sciences at STCC. The participants will share their expertise on combating domestic violence and give advice on how to assist victims of abuse.
Loretta Petty, a library assistant at STCC, is coordinating the event. She said more than 200 people attended the first Breaking the Chains session that was held last year. The discussion is designed to inform the public about the growing problem of domestic violence, the impact that it is having on families, and to spotlight the various agencies that are confronting the issue, Petty said.
