STCC's Nursing Program Fully Approved by State Board;
Public Invited to Site Visit

The Department of Nursing at Southwest Tennessee Community College has received full approval from the Tennessee Board of Nursing. Members of that board reviewed all aspects of program-policy development, curriculum development, recruitment of qualified faculty and staff, and the purchasing of state-of-the-art equipment. After the review, they voted unanimously to grant full approval.

Members of the State Board of Nursing were equally impressed with the performance of STCC's nursing graduates on the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The STCC graduates had a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX during the first reporting period, and a 96 percent pass rate during the second reporting period.

Dr. Shiphrah Williams-Evans serves as Chair and Professor of the STCC Nursing Department. She said her department is now set for its Site Visit by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, which is scheduled for October 16-18. The public is welcome to participate in this important two-day visit, Dr. Williams-Evans said.

"This is an excellent opportunity for the community to see how we are preparing our students to meet the health care needs of the 21st Century," she observed. "Southwest Tennessee Community College is committed to having the proper foundation to prepare our students to earn their Associate of Nursing, Bachelor's of Nursing and advanced degrees in Nursing."

In 1979, the STCC Nursing Program was established at what is now the Union Avenue Campus of the College. STCC has developed formal partnerships with the nursing programs at the University of Memphis, Baptist College of Health Sciences, Union University, and the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center.
