Dance Works, Inc., Sets Open House Performance at Southwest
Dance Works, Inc., a classical ballet company based at Southwest Tennessee
Community College (Southwest), will present an Open House Performance in
May. This cultural outreach initiative is set for 7 p.m., Friday, May 17,
at Southwest's Union Avenue Campus Theater, 737 Union Avenue, at Manassas.
Tickets are $6, and the performance is open to the public.
Karen Zissoff, the executive and artistic director for Dance Works, Inc.,
said the program will feature students from her company. They will perform
selected pieces of classical ballet choreographed by Zissoff and guest
choreographers, Vera Stephenson and Francisca Filleul.
This impressive production will also showcase the talents of pianists, Lyn
Joyner, Blair Seymour, Lee Ann Jones, and Matthew Sutton; synthesist, Tony
Thomas; and trumpeter, Scott Thompson.
Selections for this classical dance presentation will include excerpts
from Dance of the Hours, Soft As Nails, and Paquita. Other pieces will
include ballet, national character dance from Russia and Hungary, and Free
Movement.
Founded in 1987 by Zissoff, Dance Works, Inc., is housed in Southwest's
Fine Arts, Languages and Literature Department. The company offers dance
instructions for both females and males. This unique curriculum targets
students ages 4 to 18. It has a broad ballet base and includes creative
and contemporary dance as well as Pointe, Character and Limbering
instruction.
In addition, Dance Works, Inc., incorporates all segments of the Memphis
community in its dance program that encompasses such dance forms as
ballet, modern, jazz, and African. To ensure diversity in its
presentations, the company also collaborates with local and international
musicians.
