Southwest Graduates First Cisco Academy Class
Southwest Tennessee Community College will conduct the inaugural
graduation exercise for the participants in its Cisco Networking Academy
Program at 10 a.m., Friday, June 28, in the Richard D. Sulcer Building on
the Macon Cove campus, 5983 Macon Cove. If is free and open to the public.
Dr. Jim Willis, Southwest’s vice president for Workforce Development and
Continuing Education, will give the keynote address. Following his speech,
certificates of recognition will be presented to five students who have
successfully completed the Cisco Academy curriculum. In addition, five
instructors will be honored for having completed two semesters of
certification training to teach at the Academy.
The Cisco Networking Academy Program is a comprehensive e-learning
program, offering 10 semesters of training designed to provide students
with the Internet technology skills essential in a global economy. The
Networking Academy delivers Web-based content, online assessment, student
performance tracking, hands-on labs, instructor training and support, and
preparation for industry-standard certifications.
Launched in 1997, there are now more than 7,500 Networking Academies in
over 130 countries and in all 50 states in the U.S. More than 160,000
students are enrolled in Academies in high schools, colleges and
universities, technical schools, community-based organizations, and other
educational programs around the world.
John Churchill, director of Computer and Technical Training at Southwest,
also serves as coordinator of the Cisco Networking Academy Program.
“Southwest has entered a partnership with Cisco Networking Academy to be a
regional provider of the Networking Academy curriculum,” Churchill said.
“Southwest is working with three Memphis City Schools Career and Technical
Centers to help them provide this cutting-edge technical training to 26
schools in the Memphis City Schools system.”
