Outreach Program at Southwest to assist single parents and displaced
homemakers
Southwest Tennessee Community College will conduct orientations with
candidates June 4 -13, for a career/education counseling program that
offers participants a fresh start in pursuing both personal and career
goals. The educational outreach initiative is aimed at increasing the
income and productivity of the students.
In its continuing effort to address specific needs of the citizenry,
Southwest is offering the six-week Professional Re-entry Education Program
(PREP). This creative course is designed to serve single parents and
displaced homemakers who have the potential to succeed in a post-secondary
institution, but may lack the initial financial resources to get started
or the motivation to attend.
To aid in the motivation toward achieving career and personal goals, PREP
presents workshops on College Life, Positive Imaging, Career Options,
Stress Management, Time Management, Money Management, Assertiveness
Techniques, Employability Skills Training, Goal Setting and other related
topics.
The PREP workshops are offered at Southwest’s Macon Cove campus, 5983
Macon Cove. Classes will be held during the day on Tuesdays and Thursdays
from 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., June 25 – August 1. The evening sessions are
scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 – 9:30 p.m., June 24 – July
31.
The program also offers assistance in applying for federal aid and
scholarships, and in establishing ongoing counseling relationships between
participants and PREP counselors. In addition, childcare assistance is
offered for children ages 15 months through 12 years. After completing the
six-week career/education counseling course, participants with limited
financial resources can borrow Southwest’s textbooks from the PREP Text
library for their first term of enrollment at the College.
For more information concerning orientation or to schedule an interview,
call Southwest at (901) 333-4486.
