VA Administrator to Keynote Southwest's Nursing Seminar
The Department of Nursing at Southwest Tennessee Community College is
sponsoring a seminar from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 4, in the
Forrest Room at the Peabody Hotel. Betty Alsup, chief nurse at the
Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis, is the keynote speaker. The
cost is $35 per person. A donation will be made to the Southwest Nursing
Scholarship Fund.
Dr. Shiphrah Williams-Evans, Chair and Professor Department of Nursing,
states the event is being given in honor of the Southwest Nursing Alumni
Association. "Special recognition will be given to the Nursing Advisory
Board and community liaisons that supported the department throughout its
accreditation process and subsequent national accreditation by the
National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)," states Dr.
Williams-Evans.
Southwest's Nursing Department was recently awarded the maximum
accreditation of eight-years by the NLNAC. The Department of Nursing,
located on the Union Avenue Campus of the College, was established in 1979
and is designed to prepare graduates for immediate licensure and
employment.
For the past two years, Southwest's nursing graduates have maintained a 92
percent pass rate on the National Council Licensure Exam for Nurses. The
state average for that exam was 89.74.
Last year, Southwest's nursing graduates did extremely well on the
National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The
Southwest graduates had a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX-RN during the
first reporting period, and a 96 percent pass rate during the second
reporting period. The national average for the NCLEX-RN was 85.7.
