Softball Team Wins Season Opener
Tiffany Bright drove in Melissa Perry with the game-winning run with two
out in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Southwest softball won its
season opener 2-1 over Southeastern Illinois College last Monday (February
23) at the Appling Complex. Katie Cerrito was the winning pitcher,
allowing six hits and striking out two in seven innings. Top hitters for
the Lady Saluqis were Chrissy Odom and Heather Bryant with two hits each.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Southwest lost to Southeastern
Illinois 8-5.
Last Thursday, the Lady Saluqis won a single game over Rhodes College 10-0
to improve their record to 2-1. Pitchers Katie Cerrito and Ginny Glenn
combined to shut out Rhodes on two hits. Hitting stars for Southwest were
Cerrito (2 hits, double), Tiffany Bright (2 hits, double, 3 runs batted
in), Megan Young (double, 2 RBI), and Christi Morrison (double, 3 RBI).
The Lady Saluqis return to action today with a 3 p.m., doubleheader at
Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi. The
next home game is on Monday, March 8, against Itawamba
Community College.
