SOUTHWEST BASEBALL TEAM HOSTS COAHOMA IN HOME OPENER
Written by Keith Gentry
The Southwest baseball team will play Coahoma Community College in a 1
p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, February 12 at Tony Gagliano Memorial
Field. It will be the first home game for the Saluqis, who opened the
2005 season last weekend at Boosier Parish (LA), winning one of three
games.
The Saluqis are under the direction of 2004 Tennessee Baseball Coaches
Association Coach of the Year Johnny Ray, who is in his second season as
head coach. Top hitters so far this season for Southwest are sophomore
leftfielder Brit Vincent and sophomore catcher Collins Coltharp, both of
whom are hitting .444 through three games. The Saluqis pitching staff
is led by sophomore lefthander Shane Jackson, who is 1-0 with a 1.29
earned run average, and freshman righthander Jason Adams, who allowed no
runs in four innings of work against Bossier Parish.
Southwest opens conference play on February 18-19 with a three-game
series at Dyersburg State Community College. The next home game for the
Saluqis is on Monday, February 21, when Southwest hosts Williams
Baptist.
