SALUQIS’ BASEBALL PLAYERS COMPETE IN SUMMER LEAGUE

Several members of the Southwest baseball team as well as two Saluqis’
coaches will be competing this summer in the Stan Musial Baseball League
at Gagliano and Sowell Fields.
Johnny Ray, head baseball coach at Southwest, is coach of the Dulin’s
Sports Academy team and will have four Saluqi players on their roster.
Players on the Dulin’s team who’ve completed their eligibility at
Southwest are pitcher Shane Jackson and outfielder Chris Rogers.
Returning Southwest players are second baseman Jeremy Finney and pitcher
Ivan Nails. Also on the team are former Saluqi pitchers Josh Meeker
(currently at Crichton College) and Charlie Ligon (currently at Union
University.)
Keith Gentry, Southwest’s head softball coach, is entering his 23rd
season as coach of the Memphis Royals and is also the commissioner of
the league. Four returning Southwest players are on the Royals’ roster
this summer – first baseman Matt Akin, third baseman Clay Wright,
pitcher Travis Mathews, and pitcher/outfielder Jeffery Matlock. In
addition, catcher Chad Bishop will be playing at Southwest next season.
Also on the Royals’ team is former Saluqis’ head baseball coach Doug
Darnall.
There are four Saluqis’ players on the Memphis Cardinals’ roster,
including pitchers Curt Deverell, Jake Turner and Carl McKee, and
catcher Josh Maurizi.
The Memphis Stan Musial League, which is affiliated with the American
Amateur Baseball Congress, plays on Monday nights at Sowell Field,
Friday nights at Sowell and Gagliano Fields, and also several Sunday
nights at Sowell.
