BASS strikes up Bassmasters University at Southwest
Release written by: Larry Rea

It is back to school time for Mid-South bass fishermen.

No, we are not talking about going back to high school or college, but the benefits are worthy enough to make you a better bass fisherman.

Welcome to ESPN Outdoors’ Bassmaster University, which is headed for Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis on November 5 and 6 with a headliner list of instructors: Denny Brauer, Jimmy Houston, Woo Daves, Mark Menendez, and Greg Hawk.

There is no shortage of BASS triumphs in this group of instructors, headed by Brauer’s 1988 and Daves’ 2000 Bassmaster Classic titles. Houston is a two-time BASS angler of the year and 15-time participant in the Bassmaster Classic, one less than Daves. Menendez has qualified for two Classics and made headlines when he caught the second largest bass ever in a BASS event. Hawk is a former Red Man All-American and Bassmaster Classic finalist.

Class times are 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (with registration starting at 7 a.m.) both days with the classes set for the Southwest’s Farris Auditorium on its Macon Cove Campus near I-40 and Sycamore View.

Here is what the instructors will focus on:

  • Brauer – Flipping, pitching, bass and cover and boat positioning.

  • Houston – Spinner baits, eliminating unproductive water and seasonal patterns.

  • Daves – On the milk run, shallow water worm tactics and the Carolina rig.

  • Menendez – On the plastic worm, crank baits, jerk baits and more.

  • Hawk -- On the floating worm and top water tactics.

The enrollment fee for the two-day event is $139, which includes a merchandise pack valued at $50 and a 15 percent coupon from Bass Pro Shops for one catalog order (some restrictions apply). If you are a BASS member you can take $10 off the enrollment fee and if you are a Bass Insider member you can take $25 off the enrollment fee.

For more information or to enroll call Bassmaster University at (866) 732-BASS. The class cost for spouses and/or a youth 16 and under is $104.
