For Immediate Release Southwest Tennessee Community College will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its Gill Center, located at 3833 Mountain Terrace. The Gill Center, named in honor of Dr. Elbert T. Gill Jr., began operation on September 3, 1983. Dr. Gill, a prominent businessman in the Frayser community and a member of the legislature, was instrumental in helping gain access to the campus for Southwest. The Gill Center, located in the heart of Frayser, plays a significant role in the community and collaborates with local organizations like the Fryaser Exchange Club, the Frayser Community Association and the Ed Rice Community Center. Center Director Patsy Anderson said, “I’d like to think that the Gill Center is the Frayser community’s college. It’s here for everyone no matter if it’s a youth group, or someone who is actually attending classes, an older adult who is coming back to either be retrained, or to just take some continuing education classes.” The celebration will be held at the Gill Center on September 26 at 11 a.m. State Senator Jim Kyle will be the master of ceremonies for the event. Representatives from U.S. Senators Alexander’s and Corker’s offices will be in attendance along with other business and community leaders including Dr. Elbert Gill Jr. and family. A reception will follow the event. For more information, contact Patsy Anderson by calling (901) 333-5970. |
