Area High School Students Participate in Cisco System’s Job Shadow Day at Southwest

Over 100 students from area high schools are expected to participate in the Job Shadow Day initiative sponsored by the Cisco Networking Academy Program at Southwest on April 2. Job Shadow Day is an initiative that gives students an opportunity to learn about real workplaces and explore career pathways by “shadowing” people who work in their fields of interest. The goal of this initiative is to help young people explore the skills and education needed to succeed in the job market, and to encourage the development of relationships between students and professionals. Nationally, more than one million students and 100,000 businesses annually participate in Job Shadow Day.

Cisco System’s Job Shadow Day initiative is targeted to students interested in careers in information technology. Cisco and the Networking Academy program have hosted and participated in Job Shadow Day events for the past four years. This will be the second consecutive year Southwest will be hosting such an event. The event will be held in meeting rooms A, B, C of the Farris Building, on the Southwest Macon Cove Campus. The area high schools expected to attend are Cordova High, Kansas Career and Technology Center, Kingsbury High, Middle College High, Sheffield High, and Trezevant Career and Technology Center.

The Cisco Networking Academy Program provides participants with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience to analyze, design, build, connect, troubleshoot and maintain computer networks. Southwest’s Cisco Networking Academy program is designed around four core courses that begin by introducing students to the basics of computers and digital data communications and progresses through network cabling, LAN design, net work address planning, LAN switching and intermediate routing principles and techniques. It culminates coverage of Wide-Area Networking (WAN) principles and technologies.
