Southwest Tennessee Community College's recently constructed Macon Cove Campus Library will be officially named the Bert Bornblum Library at a Holiday Reception on December 1, 2009. The reception, hosted by the Southwest Tennessee Community College Foundation Board, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the new library located at 5983 Macon Cove in Memphis.
The library is being named in honor of Bert Bornblum for his continued support of Southwest, which began in 1994 when Bornblum joined the Foundation Board. Born in Warsaw Poland, Bornblum moved to Memphis in 1938. He along with his brother David, now deceased, established the Bornblum Brothers Scholarship Endowment Fund at Southwest in 2002. They were co-recipients of the 2004 Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Philanthropy at Southwest Tennessee Community College.
"Mr. Bornblum really appreciates the value of an education and wants educational opportunities available to all students. He set up a wonderful scholarship endowment for students to attend Southwest," said Vice President for Institutional Advancement Karen Nippert.
The two-story 69,300 square-foot library, to bear the name Bert Bornblum Library, was jointly designed by Evans Taylor Foster Childress Architects and Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects, Inc., and constructed by Smith-Doyle Contractors, Inc. It creates a new learning environment for Southwest students with its open spaces, large windows, media gallery and cyber café/poets corner and is equipped with a state-of-the-art surround sound auditorium and multimedia conference rooms, which are available for community use.
The Holiday Reception will also feature Southwest scholarship recipients and other special guests.
