Southwest Hotel Management Endowed Scholarship Established

Dr. Ralph E. Knowles recently established a Hotel Management Endowed Scholarship in memory of his son, Randall Knowles. Randall graduated from the Hospitality Management Program with a concentration in Hotel Management from what was originally State Technical Institute at Memphis. Randall worked his way up through the hotel business in several cities in the mid-south and found great satisfaction in his positions in New Orleans, La. Unfortunately, Randall passed away in 1997.

Dr. Knowles established a Culinary Arts Endowed Scholarship in Randall’s memory in 2009, but wanted to do something to honor Randall’s roots in the program. He recently returned to Memphis from his current home of Pensacola to visit the program. After meeting with Margie Coltharp, lead faculty for Hotel Management, and Chef Steven Leake, coordinator of the Hospitality Management Program, Karen Nippert, vice president for Institutional Advancement and Rose Landey, executive director for Institutional Development, Knowles established a scholarship for the Hotel Management students so that other students can receive the training his son did.

Southwest is a member of the State University and Community College System of Tennessee under the governance of the Tennessee Board of Regents. The Hospitality Management Program at Southwest is made up of three concentrations: Hotel Management, Food and Beverage Management and Culinary Arts. Students are required to complete sixty credit hours to earn an Associates of Applied Science degree in Hospitality Management. Upon graduation students typically apply to their university of choice to finish their bachelor’s degree, while some opt to go straight into the workforce. Southwest’s Hospitality Management Program places over 90 percent of its students with local hospitality employers.
