Program Description
International Studies at Southwest is established to promote global experiences through various programs for students, faculty, and staff at the college.
Southwest is committed to promoting a better understanding of and respect for different people and cultures of the world. The college is also committed to educating students who can comprehend and appreciate the complexities and contradictions within their own culture and who understand global issues. Direct contacts and experiential learning in cultures other than one’s own are among the best ways to reach these goals. Thus, international education (IE) is seen as an important component of the Southwest educational experience and as a means of empowering students and faculty. The Role of the IE Program is "to serve as both advocate and catalyst for international education by promoting international experiential development and by providing assistance to students, faculty, and administrators through information, encouragement, coordination, and financial support as may be appropriate and available."
The programs at Southwest may entail the following:
- a non-credit cultural experience in a foreign country: touring and visiting historic and cultural sites, with official tour guides supervision of Southwest faculty and/or staff
- a credit-based immersion experience in a foreign country: a one hour course that culminates in an international trip as a capstone experience, such as a foreign language experience or an art history or lesson; a project or special assignment commensurate with the one-hour credit-based experience will be required at the end of the experience for credit.
- a credit-based immersion experience in a foreign country: a three-hour or more program of study in a foreign country at another college or university, sponsored by the home institution or any study abroad program sponsored by a TnCIS institution or another institution recommended by International Education at Southwest.
- Study abroad program participants will be guided through the specific proceedures for enrolling in and paying for courses and programs at Southwest.
- an international speaker or event on the Southwest campus or event sponsored or co-sponsored by another site.
- Faculty/Staff International Programs: faculty development international programs, faculty development study, faculty as accompanying staff for any Southwest programs, faculty internationalizing courses and curriculum.
