Study Abroad Selection Criteria
Application Submission
Academic Requirements
- A minimum GPA of 2.75; a student with a lower GPA may apply, and must attach a rationale for special consideration for acceptance.
- Students must be currently enrolled at Southwest full-time or part-time
- Students must have completed 12 credit hours of college level coursework
- Students must have successfully completed, at the time of the application, Developmental Reading (DSPR 0800), Developmental Writing (DSPW 0800), and Elementary Algebra (DSPM 0800); if developmental courses are required.
Required Documentation
Note: All items listed below must be submitted to the International Studies office.*
- Two letters of recommendation from Southwest Faculty
- A brief essay, 300 words minimum, on the student's intent and purpose of participation in the selected study abroad program
- A current transcript
- An academic progress report
- Clearance slip from the Cashier's Office
- Immunization Form and a completed Southwest Physician's Form
- Signed Hold Harmless Agreement Form
- Proof of current Health Insurance and Purchase of a Travel Protection Plan
- Copy of current Passport (Proof of Purchase will be acceptable)
- A non-refundable application fee
Mandatory Participation
- An interview with an International Studies Committee Representative at Southwest
- TnCIS scheduled orientation (Location TBD)
- Southwest Study Abroad scheduled orientation (Location TBD)
- 10 hours of Service Learning projects - the projects for study abroad are coordinated with the Center for Service-Learning & Civic Engagement
