- An initiative is underway to involve more faculty through training on Lesbians, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender (LGBT) specific issues and assist in the development of a mentoring program for self-identified LGBT individuals, seminars or presentations by high-profile LGBT individuals or qualified professionals, panel discussions or forums on topics relevant to the LGBT community, the general student population or the Memphis community. Faculty will also train to guide students to support services available at Southwest, the LGBT community or in the professional community. Connection with high school LGBT student organizations to promote Southwest and present academic and non academic seminars is anticipated. Presentations are expected to center on issues relevant to the Southwest population to include equality, identity, motivation, health and community.

Work service consists of a designated number of hours that a student must work for the College or an organization in return for the tuition and book scholarship received while a member of the organization. Some academic scholarships also require work service to the College. Work hour requirements are base on number of hours enrolled each term and are required for maintaining the scholarship.
