Safe Space Program

According to the Campus Pride “2010 State of Higher Education for LGBT People” 70% of first-year LGBTQ college students consider leaving school out of fear from being bullied or harassed.

A Safe Space Program has been shown to be an effective tool for helping LGBTQ students feel safe and included in the college community and increase student retention. A Safe Space Program helps create a safe, supportive, and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ students and colleagues on campus by training college and university faculty, staff, administrators, or students to be able to:

  • Differentiate between sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression;
  • Define terminology used to describe sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression; and
  • Explore ways to support LGBTQ people in the coming out process.
