In light of the Centers for Disease Control’s recommendation to postpone or cancel international travel for students and faculty, the Southwest Tennessee Community College International Studies program has canceled trips to London and Paris scheduled for March 7-15. “Although our students’ academic dreams, aspirations and success are at the forefront of decision-making at Southwest, their safety is a top priority,” said International Studies Coordinator Jessica Miller. She and College officials have been closely monitoring the Coronavirus outbreak via the Centers for Disease Control, World Health Organization, the United States State Department and the media. “Given the fluid, evolving nature of the outbreak and the speed with which the virus is spreading in neighboring countries to our destinations, and after careful consideration, we have decided to err on the side of caution and cancel the trips to London and Paris,” Miller stated. According to Miller, the trip to Cuba in May has not been canceled, but it is under review as they continue to monitor outbreak developments. Students impacted by the London and Paris cancelations will be refunded any fees they have paid. Miller says faculty will work with students to coordinate alternate assignments so that the change of plans does not affect students’ grades. “Students are expected to continue going to class, completing assignments on time and communicating with instructors,” Miller said.
