Southwest Baseball Team To Open Season at First Pitch Classic in Florida

The Southwest baseball team, under the direction of Head Coach George Sykes, will open the 2014 season in Clearwater, Florida, at the “Winning Edge First Pitch Classic” on January 31-February 2. The Saluqis will take on South Florida State, Broward, Delgado, State College of Florida, and Hillsborough in the three day event.

Top returning sophomore pitchers for Southwest include: Justin Skinner, who led the team as a freshmen with 81 innings pitched and a 3.11 earned run average; Zack Buzzard, who started 13 games and was second on the staff with five wins; and closer Justin Kemp, who struck out 20 batters in 16 innings and was the team leader in saves with four.

Sophomore first baseman Sam Seaton is the top returning hitter. Seaton batted .305 as a freshman and led the team with 14 doubles and a .413 on-base average. Third baseman/pitcher Seth McLemore and outfielder Anthony Stricklin, both part-time starters a year ago, are also back for their sophomore seasons.

The first home games for the Southwest baseball team are on February 8, when the Saluqis host Arkansas Baptist (11 a.m.) and Coahoma (1:30 p.m.) at USA Stadium in Millington.
