Authorized by the National Safety Council (NSC), the Defensive Driving Courses (DDC), formerly offered by the University of Memphis, will now be offered by Southwest Tennessee Community College starting in September. NSC is a not-for-profit institution devoted to saving lives by preventing vehicle injuries and deaths. It partners with businesses, government agencies, elected officials and the public to impact areas such as distracted driving, teen driving, and workplace safety.

Available in both English and Spanish, the following courses will be offered:

  • DDC Online Abridged - offers an engaging online learning environment and is a refresher course or post-incident training. Participants acquire the basic knowledge and skills to recognize and avoid motor vehicle collisions and violations, and identify the benefits of defensive driving. It motivates participants to change driving behaviors and attitudes and helps them understand the legal, financial and personal costs for poor-decision making.
  • Alive at 25 - helps young adults under the age of 25 take greater responsibility for their driving by focusing on behavior, judgment and decision making. It complements driver education programs that traditionally focus on state laws and vehicle and road handling.
  • DDC 4 - provides key understanding, skills and techniques to avoid collisions, reduce traffic violations and change driver behaviors and attitudes. Participants acquire the basic knowledge and techniques to recognize potential hazards and avoid collisions and violation.
  • DDC 8/6 - provides drivers with the practical knowledge and techniques to avoid collisions and violations. This course helps drivers choose safe, responsible and lawful driving behaviors. This eight-hour course can be reduced to six hours to address an organization’s specific training requirements.
