Southwest’s Upward Bound program engaged students in unique and inventive ways during the pandemic this summer. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the program was unable to offer its traditional residential component where students get a taste of college life by residing in a college dorm. Despite having to pivot to a virtual platform, staff designed in-person adventures that stimulated the curosity of the ninth and tenth graders and allowed them to connect with one another and explore the college experience.

The students participated in a wide range of projects that included campus visits from exotic animals, STEM projects, cooking recipes, physical fitness activities, creating video games and roller coasters and various other events.

Director Ouida Pope-Warren said the activities were specifically tailored to encourage students to participate. “Upward Bound is here to provide the academic support students need to complete high school and attend college,” Warren said. “This summer’s exciting program gave students learning experiences that were both memorable and culturally enriching and the students were thrilled to be able to connect with one another in a fun yet educational way.”
