Southwest softball team starts season with best ever overall record

By March 1, the Southwest softball team was off to its best start ever with a 15-2 overall record. The win total already matched the number of games won all last year. The Lady Saluqis had won all 13 non-conference games and split a four-game conference series with Motlow State to open conference play.

Freshman infielder Jennie Bryant leads the team and ranks high among conference leaders with a .577 batting average, 5 home runs and 31 runs batted in. Other top hitters this spring are freshman catcher/third baseman MaKayla Pugh (.438 average, 15 runs batted in), freshman shortstop/outfielder Blakeleigh Garrison (.403 average, 22 runs scored, 8 stolen bases), sophomore outfielder Kelsey Moss (.364 average, 5 runs batted in), sophomore pitcher/first baseman Hannah Finley (.362 average, 1 home run, 10 runs batted in), freshman catcher Haley Cook (.333 average, 1 home run, 14 runs batted in), sophomore outfielder Cailin Stricklin (.288 average, 14 runs scored, 7 stolen bases), and freshman outfielder Samantha Ruff (.255 average, 2 home runs, 12 runs batted in).

Leading the pitching staff are Finley (5 wins, 26 strikeouts), freshman Destiny Upton (1.01 earned run average, 4-1 record. 24 strikeouts), sophomore Mattie King (3-0 record) and freshman Lily Soverns (3-1 record).
