Shelby County Schools hosts inaugural Senior Night at Southwest

Southwest faculty, staff and students enjoyed meeting more than 200 Shelby County high school seniors and their families Feb. 20 at Senior Night on the Macon Cove Campus.  Shelby County Schools (SCS) hosted the event at Southwest for the first time. It was the second time SCS held the event at a college.

Southwest’s admissions and recruitment departments organized a one-stop shop for prospective students to learn how to apply for college, obtain financial aid, and discover degrees and certificates offered by the College. More than 30 tables representing various departments, services, and clubs were set up inside the Nabors Gymnasium for easy access to faculty and staff.  A student panel held court in other buildings on campus and break-out sessions on financial aid were presented in English and Spanish. SCS Bilingual Communications and Outreach Coordinator Talia Palacio was excited to see the turn out and pleased that a session on financial aid was conducted in Spanish.  “Some students don’t have the opportunity to ask questions in their everyday environment,” Palacio said. “An event like this allows them to see what campus life is like and have their questions answered.”
